Medical professionals have warned of a rise in children suffering skin reactions from resting electronic devices against bare skin. This condition, known as erythema ab igne (EAI) or toasted skin syndrome, was recently documented in a pre-teen boy diagnosed after using a laptop on his stomach for up to eight hours daily. EAI causes a net-like rash due to prolonged exposure to low-level heat, typically seen in adults using hot water bottles or heating pads.

However, it is increasingly common among children using digital gadgets, particularly during home schooling. Early recognition in pediatric cases helps avoid unnecessary tests and prevent misdiagnoses. Dr Mara Znagoveanu of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust reported that the boy initially presented with spontaneous bruising, but no trauma, fever, or weight loss was detected.

After two weeks, the rash worsened, becoming tender and peeling. The boy was eventually diagnosed with EAI after revealing he rested the laptop on his stomach while it charged. Dr Znagoveanu emphasized that EAI may be overlooked in children, especially when the heat source is less obvious than traditional sources like hot water bottles.

She noted that the increasing use of electronic devices, particularly during home schooling, has emerged as an under-recognized cause of EAI in pediatric populations. The condition is usually reversible once the heat source is removed, but in some cases, it can lead to persistent hyper-pigmentation. Dr Znagoveanu highlighted the importance of considering EAI in children presenting with reticulated rashes, particularly in the context of increasing electronic device use.

Early recognition through targeted history-taking can prevent misdiagnosis and avoid unnecessary investigations. There are currently no formal pediatric guidelines for EAI, and diagnosis remains clinical, based on history and characteristic findings. The case underscores the need for clinicians to consider EAI in children with such symptoms.
